Universal Bans

  • For all categories, the following bans are part of the rules and thus, will not be listed under each individual category.
  • Bizhawk, Higan, Snes9x 1.43, ZSNES etc. emulators. These are banned due to inaccurate Super FX 2 chip emulation that results in fewer lag frames than the official console release. As such, the allowed emulators are: Snes9x 1.51, 1.53 - 1.56.
  • Controller functions that are not possible on an unmodified stock controller (e.g. macros, left+right, turbo); the standard SNES/SFC controller does not have these functions. Using a turbo controller would mean humanly-impossible mashing on level intro transitions and text boxes. The Japanese community does still allow them though.
  • Outside tools (e.g. RAMwatch, LUAscript).
  • Outside modification of game code. This includes things like cheat devices (e.g. game genie), crooked cart, and modified ROMs.

Main Categories

Any%

Description: Any% (Credits Warp) is the fastest category to complete the game. The main subjective for achieving top times in this category is using the Tongue Glitch to trigger a Credits Warp by doing Arbitrary Code Execution.
Leaderboards: http://www.speedrun.com/yi#Any
Timing:
  • Starts on (new) File Select
  • Ends when the sceen goes black and credits start
This category has no restrictions other than the Universal Bans.
Notable Glitches:

Any% Warps

Description: This category is the original Any% category of this game before the Null Egg Glitch and ACE were discovered. This category abuses 1-1 Warps and also consists of doing the Map Corruption Glitch in 3-3 when going for top times. It also allows resetting during the run to skip the World Cutscenes. Other than that and the timing method, it is identical to Any% Warpless however.

Timing:
  • Starts on File Select
  • Ends on Bowser Explosion

Notable Glitches:

Any% Warpless

Description: The No Major Glitches category of this game. It is the main category of the Yoshi Speedrunning Community nowadays.
History lesson: In the past this used to be the main category of just the Japanese Yoshi Community who did not want to use 1-1 Warps, whereas the rest of the World played Any% Warps without the Tongue Glitch in 3-3 which wasn't known back then. The Japanese Players did time their runs on the last input, whereas the rest of the World finished the run on Bowser Explosion, thus resulting in the different timing method between this category and Any% Warps
Leaderboards: http://www.speedrun.com/yi#Warpless
Timing:
  • Starts on (new) File Select
  • Ends on the last input before the credits start (This is when the last text box is advanced when Kamek appears after Bowser is defeated)
    • Note: The US Version of this game has 2 text boxes here, while the Japanese Version only has 1
Banned:

100%

Description: The 100% category of this game. It also bans the same glitches as Any% Warpless.
Leaderboards: http://www.speedrun.com/yi#100
Timing:
  • Starts on (new) File Select
  • Ends when the icon for the last completed level completely returns back to normal, after displaying "100"
    • When the run is completed a score check in all worlds is usually done to confirm that all levels have a score of "100" (Not required)
Banned:
Required:
  • Score of 100 in all levels
  • Including Extras

Legacy Any% Categories (Null Egg)

Any% Beat Bowser

Description: Any% Beat Bowser is the second fastest category to complete the game. The main subjective for achieving top times in this category is using the Null Egg Glitch and then doing a Save Corruption in 3-1. This run used to be the Any% category of this game before ACE got found.

Timing:
  • Starts on File Select
  • Ends on Bowser Explosion

Any% Magical Journey

Description: The Magical Journey is a very unique run of this game and used to be the fastest possible way to complete the game at one point in time. The main subjective for achieving top times in this category is using the Null Egg Glitch and carrying it all the way from 2-3 to 6-8, lowering the amount of time each level takes to complete by a large margin. This category got obsoleted by Any% Beat Bowser when the Save Corruption in 3-1 was found, but used to be the Any% category of this game. It's mainly listed for the sake of completeness.
