Introduction
*The Null Egg was originally thought to be a random occurrence at the end of 2-2 that would cause the game to crash. That was until ArneTheGreat looked into it further and discovered that the crashes were caused by a rat carrying an egg.
*If you grab the egg from the rat (without destroying him) and he despawns, the egg will also despawn because it is tied to the rat's sprite. When this happens, it creates an open sprite slot in your egg inventory - a null egg. This slot is subsequently filled by the next sprite that loads in, even if its a non-egg sprite like an enemy or collectible. Since sprites being loaded into the egg inventory in this way is not supported by the game, it usually results in a crash.
*After some experimentation, it was figured out that the boss key sprite could be obtained and then used to beat levels soon after they begin. This created the first truly broken/glitched speedrun category Magical Journey.
The following video explains how sprite ID slots work with regards to the Null Egg and also demonstrates the different uses of it.
Getting The Null Egg
This text tutorial corresponds to the video down on the left.
Destroying the enemies in this section is to make sure the correct sprite loads into the open slot in Yoshi's egg inventory.
*Enter the final screen with 6 eggs and do not use any.
*Grab the rat as it jumps out of it's hole and spit it into the green Shy Guy.
*Tongue the Skull Rat and then spit it into the Piranha Plant.
*Jump and grab the egg that the rat is carrying before it falls down. When the rat despawns, you will have the null egg.
*Go up the hill and tongue the first rat and spit it into the second.
*Go back down the hill and follow the rat carrying the egg to the left, up the other hill.
*Scroll the screen up and jump to load an off-screen rat into the open slot in Yoshi's egg inventory.
*Complete the level like normal but do not use any eggs or kill the final Piranha Plant.
Keep in mind that the game can crash upon entering the goal ring if the setup is not done properly.

Getting The Boss Key Sprite
*After getting the Null Egg in 2-2, re-enter 1-8 to fight Salvo to get the boss key sprite into your egg inventory.
*You want to end the fight with 2 eggs + the Null egg if you're running the Beat Bowser category and 3 eggs if you're running Magical Journey. (Both categories are more or less the same except Beat Bowser uses the save corruption trick to makes the run even faster). These eggs will be used for upcoming levels.
*You can use your remaining eggs to throw at the water spitting fish in the second room, the red switch in the room after and one for the boss.
*Throw one egg at Salvo and then finish the fight by spitting the small slimes into him.
*Do not tongue and catch the egg after you throw it, otherwise it will mess up the sprite ID slots and you won't be able to get the boss key.
*Once you complete the boss fight, you will have the boss key in your egg inventory which will allow you to beat every level thereafter really quickly.
In theory, it would be faster to use the boss explosion sprite rather than the boss key sprite but the game crashes in many levels when doing this because the level gets completed before being properly loaded.
Save File Corruption
This trick allows you to unlock 6-8 after 3-1 by corrupting your save data. The Any% Beat Bowser category was created as a result to differentiate it from Magical Journey.
*You have to use file 1, otherwise it won't work. Up to this point, the run is the same as Magical Journey.
*When you enter 2-8, push against the pipe to ensure you enter 3-1 with the same sub-pixel position (.FF) every time.
*Upon entering 3-1, hold right before the level intro begins and press B three times to ensure you get the same value for the sun timer every time.
*Fall into the first pit and hold left. You have 19 frames to turn left after falling and each frame produces a different result. Some frames do nothing and some will unlock any given world 6 level, excluding 6-1. There are 2 frames which unlock 6-8 so it's basically random for real-time speedruns.
*After you complete 3-1, reset the console, select file 1 and hope that you got the right frame to unlock 6-8 to finish the run.
Further Information
The position of the boss key sprite affects how quickly a level gets completed. Compared to having 3 eggs in front of the key:
*Having 2 eggs loses 9 frames per level.
*1 egg loses 47 frames.
*0 eggs loses 49 frames.

The Boss Key also affects a few levels differently depending on the version. From fastest to slowest overall version it's:
*J1.0 > J1.2 > J1.1 > U1.1 > PAL > U1.0

The Null Egg In Other Levels
3-6 Null Egg
The Null Egg can also be acquired in 3-6. A Screen Transition sprite can then replace the Null Egg to trigger a 1-1 Warp to complete the level. Unfortunately for the IL run of this level, the 1-1 Warp is slower than doing the level normally, however, the 3-6 Null Egg can be used in 100% No Restrictions to save multiple minutes.
6-4 Null Egg
The Null Egg can even acquired in 6-4! While it is harder to get than the Null Egg in 2-2, this one actually saves time in an IL run, unlike the one in 3-6, since it allows you to skip most of the room before the boss where you would normally do the Lava Skip (or take the log). A middle-ring replaces the Null Egg and upon dying and respawning, you're placed after the lava section. All you have to do after is fight Tap-Tap.
The warpless strat for this level has several interesting tricks. First, the pipe glitch can still be used to warp to directly to the "Tetris" autoscroll room instead of jumping on the bouncy arrow over the save ring, since only 1-1 warps are banned. After loading in on top of the pipe, simply press down and jump on the same frame as illustrated below. This saves between 1-2 seconds, though will cost time if you accidentally re-enter the pipe.
After the autoscroll, the falling rock section can be skipped by bouncing off of any of the floating shyguys or jumping off any of the floating crates. It is recommended that you find a spot to jump such that you can just hold down forward and jump and the autoflutter will bounce off of one of the flying shyguys. A couple of strats are shown in the following GIFs:
The warped route for this level makes use of the pipe glitch to activate the 1-1 warp. Completing 1-1 saves about 45 seconds over completing 2-1 normally, due to the long tetris autoscroll.

__FORCETOC__

What is the "practice hack?"
The practice hack, created by Arnethegreat, is ROM of the vanilla version of Yoshi's Island that is modified to allow save-states, auto-scroll disable, egg-count manipulation, free-roam, and many other useful tools for learning how to speedrun the game. The practice hack can be downloaded just like any other SNES ROM. The only difference is, because most flash cartridges (Super UFO Pro 8 and Super Everdrive) currently do not offer stand-alone support for enhancement chips like the SuperFX2, the Yoshi's Island practice hack can be used in conjunction with a physical copy of Yoshi's Island inserted into the top of the Super UFO Pro 8. However, recently SD2SNES offers stand alone use of the practice hack.

What is the Super UFO Pro 8?
The Super UFO Pro 8 is a type of flash cartridge that can allow players to load and play ROMs on original hardware. Yoshi's Island is one of the few games on the SNES that uses an enhancement chip called the SuperFX 2. Rather than flood this section with technical information about the chip, we'll just include the link to the Wikipedia article that explains what the chip is, and how it works.

The Super UFO Pro 8 is shaped very similarly to original Super Famicom cartridges. It has a removable cap on the top that allows you to insert an SNES/SFC cartridge (physically identical to how the old Sonic and Knuckles cartridge worked on the Sega Genesis). The Super UFO Pro 8 also requires an SD card in order to function. Most sizes will work, depending how many ROMs you're planning on putting on it. If you're just planning on practicing Yoshi's Island, something as small as a 4GB SD card would be sufficient. Unfortunately the UFO is often unreliable and can crash at random, making it annoying to practice with.

What is SD2SNES?
SD2SNES is another type of flash cart. It comes in many shapes modeled after Super Famicom and SNES carts, and most are region free. It is basically a super powerful emulator inside a flash cart, and as of lately it can do Super FX2 and SA-1, two chip types that no other flash cart can do by themselves. The firmware itself is free to download, but the hardware is rather pricey, around $200 new. The payoff is that it is super reliable and is very fast, which are two things that the UFO lacks.

How do I use the practice hack?
Making the practice hack work on original hardware can be tricky at first, but it certainly isn't that complicated. Even though the practice hack is a downloadable ROM that you will place on your SD card, you will still need a physical copy of Yoshi's Island on top of the Super UFO Pro 8 for it to work. The reason for this goes back to the SuperFX2 enhancement chip inside the Yoshi's Island cartridge. Because the Super UFO Pro 8 doesn't have native support for enhancement chips, the physical Yoshi's Island cartridge is required. The Super UFO Pro 8 loads the practice hack ROM, then just uses the SuperFX2 chip inside the actual cartridge.

To make it work, you will need to download the version of the practice hack that matches the version on your physical cartridge. See our section on version differences to determine what version your cartridge is. If you have the Japanese 1.0 cartridge, then only the Japanese 1.0 version of the hack will work. If you have the US 1.0 cartridge, then only the US 1.0 version of the practice hack will work. The same holds true for both Japanese/US 1.1 and later versions.

There are two major keys to this level. One is the elusive 5-4 skip, and the second is killing Sluggy in only 4 shots. Both are explained in detail below. Besides that, this level has a lot of stairs and you want to be fast with them. The fastest way to move up stairs is to continuously jump, however you want to run for a few frames between each jump as the stairs give you a little bit of speed in the beginning, but then don't let you exceed that speed.

Autoscroller Skip
This trick is the most saught after and prestigious trick, since it saves over a minute in a run if done.

The trick uses a long series of perfect flutters and then bats to regain height with extended flutters to skip the autoscroller, it gains its difficulty in being able to perfect flutter consistentently and manipulating the bats which don't do the same thing everytime.

The current warpless and 100% world records use this trick.

You can find an image based step-by-step guide, for help on learning the skip, here.

Sluggy 1 Shots
There is a way to kill sluggy in only 4 shots. This strat is very fast, and is very reliable with enough practice.

Turn around and do neutrals here:
There is a 1-1 warp at the beginning of 5-4 that saves quite a bit of time. This video demonstrates the warp in real time and includes a description for a consistent setup (courtesy of Blkyoshi) for the warp. (skip to ~9:45)

There is also a harder strat developed by Poahr for the 5-4 warp. None of the Warps runs have this yet do to it being incredibly difficult RTA.
Basics
* The major notable trick in this level is referred to as the "1-2 skip," which entirely bypasses the second screen of 1-2
* Though very precise, the trick is easily attempted multiple times in succession and can be grasped by a new player with a little bit of practice.
* The recommended method for performing this trick involves spitting a flower enemy (Crayzee Dayzee) into the wall and bouncing off of it as shown in the GIF.
* After landing 1-2 skip, you go a bit to the left so you can have right momentum when you clear the wall.
* You have to jump over the second pit or you will fall in and lose time.
* Be sure to have an extra egg to shoot the pihranha plant near the end, saving a bit of time not collecting the red coins.

1-2 Skip: Spit Method
* You set up the flower spit by touching the left side of the wooden post closest to the wall as shown in the video.
* Then jump onto the post while holding right and jump when you are in about the middle of the post.
* Hold B the entire time.
* When Yoshi is about directly over the red arrow, release forward and press Y at about the same time.
* If you did it on the correct frame, you will continue holding B and be able to easily flutter over the ledge.

1-2 Skip: Perfect Jump Method
* This 1-2 skip method is performed by combining a perfect jump with an extended flutter.
* The trick is simple to understand, but hard to execute: you must bounce on a Shy Guy and then immediately perform a first-frame jump off of the wooden posts.
* The part that makes this trick difficult besides just having a frame perfect input is that you cannot lose any height after jumping on the shyguy. If you lose any height at and still hit the perfect jump, you will just get a regular flutter.
* If executed correctly, Yoshi will flutter much higher than usual.
* A second flutter can then give Yoshi just enough height to go on top of the level, and skip the entire middle section.

1-2 Skip: Fast Setup
* This method is a method that is faster than both the perfect jump and the safe pole method discussed earlier.
* There are a couple ways to do this but the one in this example is from Poahr.
* This method is the least consistent of all the 1-2 setups, and should be avoided until you are absolutely confident with it.

* You can opt out of 1-2 skip and complete the 2nd screen when just starting out.
* For the jump under the flower, just press and hold jump at the red arrow sign and the auto flutter will get you on the ledge.

* Here is a video with inputs showing this method: https://youtu.be/yZALWMbWbwY

Optimal Second Screen
* You can opt out of 1-2 skip and complete the 2nd screen when just starting out.
* For the jump under the flower, just press and hold jump at the red arrow sign and the auto flutter will get you on the ledge.

There aren't any major tricks in this level. The fastest way to move up stairs is to continuously jump, however you want to run for a few frames between each jump as the stairs give you a little bit of speed in the beginning, but then don't let you exceed that speed.

The boss fight should ideally take no more than 3 egg shots per hit. 1 and 2 eggshots per hit are possible with screen-scrolling strategies.

Getting Door 4 consistently is the most important 'tech' in this level when you are starting out. Eventually you will get it everytime and focus on getting good bowser fights.

Getting Door 4 consistently is the most important 'tech' in this level when you are starting out. Eventually you will get it everytime and focus on getting good bowser fights.

There are two common ways of doing the shot. The version presented here is the faster one, which is also harder to mess up once its learned. It's a little bit harder to learn though, since the other Version requires nothing but a single timed shot at a certain spot.

The first two big tricks in this level are right at the start. The fist is a trick that will move the camera up and will keep it there. This is done with a very precise movement: https://imgur.com/a/XYniz

Holding up before and during the spinning green platforms causes the next one to spawn faster, saving time. There is a good video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HS4x6kOqtM

At the end of the level, a gatehack using a forward spit enemy can be done to open the gate to the exit pipe. In order for it to work, you must tongue one of the green spikey guys or its pot, give it a negative (left) x speed, such as by spitting it against the gate and having it bounce backwards, then respitting it into the gate. This is shown in the gif below.

However this gatehack requires the gate to be spawned with a correct camera position. An easy method to do this is to run down the last couple of edges rather than jumping down them.
This level has many tricks. First, the key can be tongued through the wall through use of the rock. When Yoshi jumps up into the rock, it forces him left or right. If Yoshi's tongue is out when this happens, the tongue will be forced through the wall, allowing Yoshi to tongue the key. The positioning for this is the most difficult part: in general, the right side of the rock should be just covering the keyhole, and Yoshi should be standing as shown in the picture below:

The best way to set this up is to push the rock to the left, then jump over the rock and go to the right side of the bottom wooden platform. You then push the rock over to where it is just covering the keyhole.

You the go underneath the rock and get the key. The inputs for this are to tongue + jump and hold them down until the key has been moved closer to Yoshi. Then, walk a little bit to the left (pushing the rock) and retongue the key in order to tongue it through the wall.
The second section can be skipped by egging away enough foam to extended flutter onto and stand on. Then, a perfect flutter through the hole the key falls out of allows Yoshi to continue through the door to the end of the level.

Rockless
The key can be reached without using the rock by carefully positioning Yoshi's tongue through the wall with a little bit of momentum, true swag~
To get the key, run alongside the bottom and tongue then jump three frames later. Hold left after jumping to adjust the way the key flies through the air.

Once the key is touching the wall stand back far and tongue once more to get the key. Standing too close will cause the key to bounce against the wall and fly back. A well executed rockless can save 8 seconds compared to a perfect rock attempt.
The submarine can be skipped by doing the tongue glitch in this level. To perform the trick, you first need either a pow block, or a big egg. Big eggs are recommended as there is no known way to consistently get a POW block. See below for setups on keeping big eggs from 2-7 into 3-3.

In the 2nd screen of 3-3 with a big egg, grab an enemy, throw the big egg into the air, and spit out the enemy right before the big egg lands. This will activate the tongue glitch.

* Here is a video with inputs showing this method: https://youtu.be/yZALWMbWbwY

1-2 Skip: Perfect Jump Method
* This 1-2 skip method is performed by combining a perfect jump with an extended flutter.
* The trick is simple to understand, but hard to execute: you must bounce on a Shy Guy and then immediately perform a first-frame jump off of the wooden posts.
* If executed correctly, Yoshi will flutter much higher than usual.
* A second flutter can then give Yoshi just enough height to go on top of the level, and skip the entire middle section.

Optimal Second Screen
* You can opt out of 1-2 skip and complete the 2nd screen when just starting out.
* For the jump under the flower, just press and hold jump at the red arrow sign and the auto flutter will get you on the ledge.

A very hard level to do optimally. The ghost blocking the path at the beginning can be a bit tricky. Yoshi must be facing away from him like any mario ghost; however, if you turn around while still in the air he might fly up and towards Yoshi, which can make shyguys roll under him instead of killing him. Also the shyguys walk back and forth randomly, which can make it annoying.

The blob fight can seem very inconsistent, but if you position yourself correctly you can get him to always follow the same pattern. Refer to the video below, which requires entering the room with 4-5 eggs:
TODO:Video was missing on old wiki

*1 Run all the way into the corner, so that he jumps right.
*2 As soon as he jumps right, position yourself so that an upward egg shot will hit the left side of him when he lands on the platform below. Time the egg shot so that it hits AFTER he lands on the platform, otherwise he will just change direction and land on the floor.
*3 Shift the camera upwards during his invulnerability period. As soon as he's vulnerable, shoot his left side with one more egg. When he starts jumping to the right, follow his path and unleash with a ravenous flurry of upward egg shots. You should be able to consistently finish him before he jumps back down onto the floor.

The second key/blob can be skipped using an extended flutter. Check out the video on that page.

The lava skip is very risky for a real run. Riding the log is only ~3-5 seconds slower. Speed the log up by standing on the left side of it, which will cause you to ride the waves.

Tap-tap can be killed by firing ~5 quick "neutral" egg shots (just spam shoot egg) without moving. Therefore, getting to him with sufficient eggs is important.

There is a faster, if harder Tap-tap quick-kill strat with 4 eggs. The strat is:
