Introduction
Originally thought to be a random occurrence at the end of 2-2 where the game would crash for seemingly no reason, the null egg is a glitched sprite that allows other sprites to be added to your egg inventory. ArneTheGreat looked into it and found that the crashes were caused by the rat carrying an egg, which led to the discovery that non-egg sprites such as the boss key and boss explosion could be obtained and used via the null egg

and the first truly broken speedrun category was born: Magical Journey
The following video explains the sprite ID slots regarding the Null Egg and also demonstrates the different uses of it.
Getting The Null Egg
*In 2-2, enter the final screen with 6 eggs and do not use any.
*Near the end of the level, grab the rat as it jumps out of it's hole and spit it into the green Shy Guy.
*Next, tongue the Skull Rat and then spit it into the Piranha Plant.
*Jump and grab the egg that the rat is carrying before it falls down.
*Then, go up the hill and tongue the first rat and spit it into the second.
*Go back down the hill and follow the rat carrying the egg to the left, up the other hill.
*Finally, scroll the screen up and jump, then complete the level as normal. Do not use any eggs or kill the final Piranha Plant.
*Keep in mind that the game can crash upon entering the goal ring if the Null Egg is not setup properly.
Getting The Boss Key Sprite
*After getting the Null Egg in 2-2, re-enter 1-8 and fight Salvo to get the Boss Key sprite into your egg inventory.
*You want to end the fight with 2 eggs + the Null egg if you're running the Beat Bowser category and 3 eggs if you're running Magical Journey. (Both categories are more or less the same except Beat Bowser uses the trick save corruption which makes the run even faster). Regardless, these eggs will be used for the upcoming levels.
*You can use your remaining eggs to throw at the fish in the second room, the red switch in the room after and one for the boss.
*Throw one egg at Salvo and then finish the fight by tonguing and spitting the small slimes into him.
*Do not tongue and catch the egg after you throw it, otherwise it will mess up the sprite ID slots and the trick won't work.
*Once you complete the boss fight, the Boss Key sprite will replace the Null Egg which will allow you to beat every level thereafter really quickly.
*In theory, it would be faster to use the boss explosion sprite rather than the Boss Key sprite but the game crashes in many levels when doing this because the level gets completed before being properly loaded.
Save File Corruption
This trick allows you to unlock 6-8 after 3-1 by corrupting your save data. The category Any% Beat Bowser (Any% No ACE) was created as a result to differentiate it from Magical Journey.
*You have to run on file 1 otherwise it won't work and up to this point, it's the same Magical Journey.
*When you enter 2-8, push against the pipe to ensure you enter 3-1 with the same sub-pixel position (.FF) every time.
*Upon entering 3-1, hold right before the intro transition starts and press B three times to ensure you get the same value for the "sun timer" every time.
*Fall into the first pit and hold left. You have 19 frames to turn left after falling before you would land on the second tree branch and each frame produces a different result. Some frames do nothing and some will unlock any given level from World 6, excluding 6-1. There are 2 frames which unlock 6-8 so it's basically random for real-time speedruns.
*After you complete 3-1, reset the console, select file 1 and hope that you got the right frame to unlock 6-8 to finish the run.
Further Information
The position of the Boss Key sprite affects how quickly a level gets completed. Compared to having 3 eggs in front of the key:
*Having 2 eggs loses 9 frames per level.
*1 egg loses 47 frames.
*0 eggs loses 49 frames.

The Boss Key also affects a few levels differently depending on the version. From fastest to slowest overall version it's:
*J1.0
*J1.2
*J1.1
*U1.1
*PAL
*U1.0

The Null Egg In Other Levels
3-6 Null Egg
The Null Egg can also be acquired in 3-6. A Screen Transition sprite can then replace the Null Egg to trigger a 1-1 Warp to complete the level. Unfortunately for the IL run of this level, the 1-1 Warp is slower than doing the level normally, however, the 3-6 Null Egg can be used in 100% No Restrictions to save multiple minutes.
6-4 Null Egg
The Null Egg can even acquired in 6-4! While it is harder to get than the Null Egg in 2-2, this one actually saves time in an IL run, unlike the one in 3-6, since it allows you to skip most of the room before the boss where you would normally do the Lava Skip (or take the log). A middle-ring replaces the Null Egg and upon dying and respawning, you're placed after the lava section. All you have to do after is fight Tap-Tap.

Pipe Jump
If down and jump are pressed on the same frame while standing on a pipe, Yoshi both jumps and goes down the pipe. This speeds up the time it takes Yoshi to exit the screen by skipping the animation where he climbs into the pipe.
On a few pipes in the game, this trick will cause a 1-1 Warp, like in 1-1 or 2-1. It may also cause a warp to adjacent rooms like with the second pipe in 2-1 and 2-8 . Since this is not a 1-1 Warp though, it is allowed in Warpless and 100% speedruns.

There are three variations of the pipe jump:
*Down + B
*Down + B + Y
*Down + B + A

An easy way to do it is to use one hand. With your index finger on the dpad and your pinky on B, move your whole hand to press down and jump at the same time. In Lee's tutorial, he talks about the method that he uses. You should experiment a bit to find a method that works best for you!

Time Save
*Each pipe jump saves 29 frames over going down the pipe normally.
*In 4-E doing an up+jump pipe entry saves 42 frames.

Warpless
*Pipes (13): 1-3, 1-4, 1-6, 2-3, 2-7, 2-8, 3-8, 4-2, 4-4, 5-7(2), 6-4, 6-7
*2-1 adjacent warp: 89 frames or 1.48s
*2-8 adjacent warp: 208 frames or 3.46s
*Time save w/o adjacent warps: 377 frames or 6.28s
*Total time save: 674 frames or 11.23s
Enemy Wall-spit
Normally, enemies spit at walls will bounce off or be destroyed, however, if spit into the wall with the right speed/position, they can clip into the wall very briefly (like Yoshi when doing a wall-jump and can be bounced on. This can be used to gain significant height and even skip parts of levels like in 1-2 and 6-7 .

Off-Screen Vase Break
The vase that contains the key in 1-4 can be broken immediately when off-screen with an egg-shot. This then causes the key to fly in the direction that Yoshi is facing. Unfortunately, the same trick does not work on the vase in 2-8.

Train Clip
If you land directly on the starting tracks while holding left or right, you can clip off briefly. Since the tracks confine the train, it can be faster to do this in 2-8 and 5-8.

Screen Scrolling
The screen will scroll depending on where Yoshi is heading.

*Holding up/down will scroll the screen vertically in the respective direction if the level allows for it, however, this is not possible while egg-aiming.
*Jumping as the screen is scrolling will scroll it even higher compared to just holding up.
*You can also use a jump to "correct" the screen position if you can get it to scroll a little bit higher.
*A perfect jump won't allow the screen to scroll vertically.
*An upward screen scroll can also be buffered. If Yoshi is in a part of a level where the screen cannot scroll, you can hold up and then when you move to a part of the level where the screen can scroll, it will happen automatically. This can be seen in 1-4 and 1-7 100%.

Enemies, collectibles and auto-scroll triggers only load in when the screen is scrolled properly. This is used many times in speedruns, for example, loading in a flower in 1-2 to skip the helicopter, loading in the red coins in 1-7 to skip the beanstalk and in 6-5 to skip the autoscroller.

Gate-hack
There are many one-way gates in that can be opened backwards. The easiest method is to do an up-shot at the top of the gate with some speed. The egg clips into the gate and knocks it open from the other side. This is used in various places to save time in all speedrun categories.

Gate-hack tips:
*Tap A once quickly to throw the egg. Don't hold A for a bit and then release.
*Hold up the entire time, even after tapping A to get the angled up-shot.
*Hold B the entire time and if you miss the first shot, let Yoshi do an auto-flutter and try again. It is actually easier to get the fluttering gate-hack than the regular one due to a bigger window.
*Run into the gate to knock it inwards a little bit to make it easier to get the gate-hack to work. This greatly increases the window of success from 3 frames to around 9.

Gate-hacks are used in 2-1 , 2-4 and 5-5 .

Another variation of the gate-hack can be seen in 6-7 where you use a Spiked Fun Guy (or it's pot). You spit it out while pushing against the gate, re-tongue it and do it once more. The negative x-velocity of the enemy opens the gate. This works with anything that bounces off of the gate. However, this trick requires the gate to be loaded in the correct sprite slot. If the gate is in a higher numbered slot than the enemy, the gate-hack will not work. You can see the sprite IDs and a consistent method demonstrated here.
Check the DLC page if you would like to experiment with it for yourself.

Sprite Overload
The game cannot have more than 23 sprites loaded in on-screen at once. Too many sprites will either cause the game to lag or to simply not load things. Keep in mind that some sprite slots are reserved for important things and will always stay loaded such as Baby Mario and the eggs that you are carrying

In speedrunning this has both pros and cons. It can be used to avoid loading in enemies to save time, such as the Bullet Bill Launchers in 2-7 . But it can also be frustrating in 100% speedruns if you overlook a red coin or flower that didn't load in.
Ghost Skip
Normally Caged Ghosts take at least 4 egg shots to jump over, however, when they load in, they grow in size. Shooting them during the growing phase causes them to stop growing and reduce by 1 size. This can be used to save both time and eggs. There are 2 of these in 3-8 . Only one is seen in Warpless speedruns.

Another Ghost Skip is used in 6-E where you spit a Mace Guy into the horizontal Caged Ghost. Using visual cues can significantly increase consistency.
Piranha Skip
It is possible to travel through green Piranha Plants without getting hit by throwing an egg or spitting an enemy into them. It is a 32 frame window to do so.

It is also possible to damage boost through these Piranha Plants by facing backwards and running/fluttering into them. Some people might find this more consistent than the egg throwing method, however, this method is slower and you lose Baby Mario.

Piranha skips are used in 3-8 , 4-1, 4-3 , 4-6 , 5-1 and 5-7 .

You can even throw an egg through the piranha while it's stunned, though it's only useful in 3-8 100%

Chicken Baxter
The 4-7 Chicken Baxter is a way to bring a chicken (Huffin Puffin) to 4-8 where it can be used against Hookbill to flip him over instantly. A good chicken fight saves 10 seconds over an optimal normal fight. It's mainly an Any% trick but it can also be used in 100%.
Important Note: When canceling the aiming of a chicken, there is a 1 in 3 chance that it will be dropped.
A Chicken Baxter is performed by aiming the chicken and cancelling it on the same frame as you enter a goal ring. However, a certain setup is needed to make it work due to how sprite IDs work. The sprite ID of the chicken has to be higher than the goal ring.
*Running the following Lua script in an emulator can help to find a setup and better understand sprite IDs.
Blast-Off
This trick only occurs in 4-8.

If Yoshi ground pounds Hookbill before he lands on his back on the final hit of the fight, Yoshi will "blast off" into the sky. This trick can cost you around 25 seconds if done on the far right side of the screen or on Hookbill's right, to a minute if you don't have Baby Mario . However, this can be avoided by always doing the final ground pound while on the left side of Hookbill, with Baby Mario and away from the right side of the stage (where the screen stops scrolling).

Here is a comparison of the different blast-off variations.

Off-Screen Red Coin Fly Guy Shot
In levels where Fly Guys with red coins fly on screen, you can shoot them before they fly in to be able to collect the coin a little bit quicker. This is because the Fly Guy already has a hitbox where he's supposed to fly to and thus can be hit early. (You can also be hit ).
This can be seen in 2-5 3-2 , 4-3 , 5-1 and 5-E .

Red Coin Duplication
It is possible to duplicate red coins carried by Patrolling Fly Guys. Keep in mind, this trick only works on the Fly Guys that stay on the screen, not the ones that fly in and leave. To do this you want to:
*Tongue the Fly Guy without collecting the red coin.
*Spit out the Fly Guy so that it goes off-screen without destroying it.
*Scroll the screen so that the place where the Fly Guy was flying is off-screen.
*Then go back to respawn the Fly Guy.
*You should now have 2 red coins, one on the ground and one being carried by the Fly Guy.

You can dupe up to 3 red coins but it is incredibly hard since the timing is very tight. Instead, 100% runners opt to only dupe 1 or 2 coins, depending on the level.
Red coin dupes are used in 2-2 , 2-7 , 4-5 , 4-6 , 5-1 , 5-4 and more recently, 4-1 to get 20 red coins faster. You can dupe red coins in the last screen of 2-5 and 5-1 as a backup and the 2nd to last screen of 2-7, if you missed a coin or failed to collect one from a Fly Guy.
You can also dupe red coins by using a middle-ring, though it's only doable in 4-5 .
The intro level of Yoshi's Island is a short sequence of text boxes that can be advanced and then Start + Select can be used to exit the level. Switching to hasty is mandatory. Also see button mashing regarding all level intros.
1-1 is widely accepted to be one of the more difficult levels, even though it is the first it features many mechanics that will be used for the rest of the run so get ready for some fun!

First Screen
First things first avoid all slopes, then we have the first flower of the game.

This flower will trigger a text box that needs to be advanced just like in the intro level.

Optimally you eat the Dayzee and do a neutral into the Piranha Plant as you can see in the tutorial video linked at the bottom of this page, and gif below. Then you jump onto platform then Yellow Shy Guy as to avoid a bad screen scroll and do an extended flutter up to the left to the lower platform. Swallowing the Shy Guy during your reflutter is a good strat, but the Shy Guy must be swallowed. See Making Eggs for more info on swallowing enemies. Once you have reached the platform jump up to the second platform grab the Flower. After grabbing the Flower jump left and grab the Fly Guy trying to collect all Stars. Jump up to the second platform and grab all Red Coins which are in the middle row of coins.

Jump off the end of the platform as you see in the tutorial video and do a back tongue to grab the yellow Shy Guy. Then proceed under the Piranha Plant to the pipe while swallowing the enemy with a small jump.

Cave Screen
As you enter the cave section begin moving right falling down onto the Egg Block. Jump off the Egg Block and eat the Fly Guy collecting the Red Coin. Tongue the Green Shy Guy, and upspit it into the Red Fly Guy collecting the Red Coin. Immediately after landing begin a horizontal egg shot to collect the three Red Coins to the right. After your shot go back to the left and collect the Red Coin on the ground. Quickly after begin an upshot and when your Egg Cursor is on the coin hanging from the Balloon release the shot to collect the three Red Coins above you. As the Egg ricochet's, proceed to jump onto the brown chomp rock, once the Egg has changed into a Red Egg tongue the Egg to get it for later. Proceed up to the pipe and back to the first screen. See Red Eggs for more info on Eggs and Egg making. The gif below demonstrates the Cave Screen at normal speed.
Screen One Pt.2
First thing after coming up from the pipe up tongue the Yellow Shy Guy above Yoshi before you jumping. Then proceed to the right tonguing the Green Shy Guy do a quick neutral into the white rock it will ricochet down and collect the Flower below. Jump to the white rock you just Egg'd at and jump over the Piranha Plant. Begin an Egg Shot when level with the Piranha Plant, and lock it when horizontal. Be careful here with this Egg shot as getting a Red Egg to hit the Piranha Plant will cause lag. Move left once you land on the platform and shoot the Egg to collect the Red Coins. Collect the Flower with Yoshi. See the gif below for a demonstration.

Then proceed up the pinwheel platforms jumping over the arrow sign to land on the lower hill. Jump and aim an Egg, when it is at the correct angle to hit the cloud release the shot and flutter through the cloud. As you land on the white rock jump and upspit the Shy Guy while moving right it will land behind you. As you move right against the wall a cloud will spawn as you touch it, an up Egg will open the cloud. Collect all the Stars. Land on the rock and jump up onto the pinwheel platforms. A left-right here can help to position you to collect to the two Red Coins above.
Intro Level

Jump onto the Shy Guy doing an Extended Flutter up grabbing the Flower collect a Star or two if you can. Land on the rock and jump up onto the pinwheel platforms. A left-right here can help to position you to collect to the two Red Coins above. See the gif below for a demonstration.
General Movement
There is no run button, except when controlling super baby mario or the train vehicle.
None of the other vehicles move faster when holding Y.
The quickest way to stop moving is to hold down, or to tongue a solid object.
Hold down while in the air to perform a ground pound.
Hold up while standing still to scroll the screen upwards, also makes baby Mario and Yoshi look up.
Visit the Movement Page for more information on how to control your Yoshi!
Combinations
Start + Select during a level that you have already beaten returns to the world map.
Pushing Y or down while aiming an egg cancels the egg throwing animation and swaps to the next egg.
Holding up while starting egg aiming starts the egg cursor pointing up and lets you aim lower than a "neutral shot".
To play free thief minigames directly from the map screen, hold Select and press the following buttons in order: X, X, Y, B, A.
Patient VS. Hasty
Two options are accessible on the world map that change how the egg button works.
Patient is the default, and makes it so that tapping A once begins the egg-firing animation, and tapping it again fires the egg.
Hasty, on the other hand, sets it so that pushing A down begins the egg-firing animation, and releasing A fires the egg.
Most speedrunners use Hasty, which allows you to more easily fire off quick egg throws by just tapping the button once, as opposed to twice.
You can also change the controls on the first hint box in 1-3.
It was said that swapping to Hasty in 1-3 saves time compared to swapping at the stage selection.
This was tested on the Japanese version of the game and the results are as follows:
::: Swapping to hasty at stage select takes 112 frames minimum and requires 9 inputs.
::: Swapping to hasty at the hint box in 1-3 takes 117 frames minimum and requires 2 inputs.
Since 1-3 requires way less inputs its likely to still save time over the stage select control change in an RTA setting using the Japanese cartridge. Switching to Hasty in 1-3 while using the North American cartridge will likely lose time because of an extra screen of dialog the player must scroll through.

Transitions and Dialogues
*Holding any button during the score tally screen completes it as fast as possible -- no need to mash!
*Start, A, B, X, and Y can be used to select a new level during the overworld map transition (mash!)
*Alternate mashing down + A to skip dialogue boxes as quickly as possible. Start slightly before the dialogue begins to have a chance at getting a frame-perfect quick skip.
*Most level intro transitions (e.g. "1-1: Make Eggs, Throw Eggs") can be shortened by button mashing, which adds up to many seconds over the course of a run. The dpad and every button will work, so swirl the dpad and mash every button (including L and R).
*Playing the Japanese version is estimated to save around 9 seconds in 100% and 7 seconds in Any% because of dialogue.
